The Spoken Canteen with Jess Murphy

Join us for an evening of sharing food and sharing stories at The Spoken Canteen as a part of the Samhain Festival of Food and Culture 2024 on November 10th at 4 pm at The Red Chapel.
The Spoken Canteen is a new initiative brought to you by Jess Murphy, high profile ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and anthropologist Yifan Wang, PhD. This initiative is seeking to unite communities across the globe by celebrating the most human experience sharing a meal.

On November 10th, join us for an incredibly powerful, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant evening of stories and flavours. On the night we will be debuting a short film, produced by Heavy Man Films’ Tomek Ciezki, that features five remarkable stories from refugees coming from Afghanistan, Iran, Malawi, Ukraine, and Yemen. They share with us how they’ve made Ireland their home by fusing their traditions and food culture with modern Irish cuisine.

While the short film is screening, we will have an opportunity to enjoy some the foods this mingling of lives, places and stories has produced. Jess has been gathering foods from Ireland along with some special ingredients from the original homes of the story tellers and is creating tasting plates so that we can take this journey together with all of our senses. “Food is a language in its truest self – breaking all barriers of ethnicity, religion, and upbringing”, Jess says. The Spoken Canteen provides such a platform, celebrating food culture founded in sharing stories that would otherwise be untold.

The Spoken Canteen is an opportunity to promote and nurture the distinct beauty of our everyday communities. By uplifting one another in shared experiences, our initiative is to foster communities across age, ethnicity, language, gender and unspoken barriers. For some, food is a weapon; for us food is a mighty force for good.
