Recently we were delighted to kick of our Farm Walk Series in the historic Killua Castle where visitors on the day got a unique insight into the castle’s innovative regenerative farming and rewilding projects. This event, held in the stunning and ecologically diverse parkland of Killua Castle.

The day began with a warm welcome from the owners of Killua Castle- the Krause family who gave participants an overview of Killua Castle’s rich history, its restoration journey, and the environmental initiatives that they have spearheaded.

Following our introduction to Killua Castles initiatives Klause Krause then led participants on a tour of their regenerative farming and rewilding projects on a specially designed “trailer bus” that allowed us to get a great view of everything. We started off our tour viewing the native Irish breed livestock including Old Irish Goats, Jacobs Sheep and Irish Moiled Cows along with their parkland deer.

This immersive experience provided attendees with a firsthand look at the regenerative farming techniques employed on the estate. Participants learned how these methods are reviving the once-degraded parkland, transforming it into a thriving ecosystem.

The highlight of the tour was exploring the castle’s 100-acre rewilding project, many attendees were thrilled to spot various flora and fauna that have flourished as a result of these efforts. We also got a rare glimpse of their two elusive wild boars and the very friendly Kerry Bog ponies.

After the enlightening tour, participants were treated to a delicious lunch at the Killua Castle Food Truck of a Killua Castle beef burger.

This successful launch of the Farm Walks Series at Killua Castle marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for The Centre of Food Culture, Boyne Valley and we have a host of events coming up over the next few months that can all be viewed and booked here.
