Cultivating Connections: Farm Walk at Shalvanstown Biodynamic Farm
Join us on Saturday, 29th March at 11am for a unique farm walk and tour with owner John McDonnell owner of Shalvanstown Farm, a leader in biodynamic and regenerative agriculture in the Boyne Valley.
Hosted by John McDonnell, this immersive experience will take you through the principles of biodynamic farming, the importance of soil health and holistic land management, and how Shalvanstown’s organic practices contribute to sustainable food production.
During the tour, you’ll explore the farm’s organic beef, lamb, and grain production, learn about biodynamic preparations and planting cycles, and discover how these methods are shaping the future of sustainable agriculture in Ireland.
Shalvanstown Organic Farm has been in the family for 5 generations. John inherited it from his Mother who inherited from her father Ray Cogan who was well known in Meath farming circles. It is 68 hectares of gently sloping free draining gery brown podzolic soil.
As soon as John started he converted the farm to organic production with a sheep flock and bought in finishing cattle.
Whilst learning about organic methods he found the Irish Biodynamic Agricultural Association which provided many conferences and Lectures which were most inspiring. He made life long friendships in what felt like an underground movement with countless esoteric avenues to explore. New impetus was created in 2017 when he was approached by two other farmers looking to cooperate to grow Biodynamic barley for Waterford Distillery. It has been successful in producing one of the most distinctive whiskeys to come from Ireland.
Whether you’re a farmer, food producer, or simply curious about regenerative food systems, this is a fantastic opportunity to see, learn, and connect in a beautiful farm setting.
