A Scoop & a Yarn: Samhain Special
We all have a story to tell, especially about food, and at this year’s Samhain Festival of Food & Culture, you’ll get a chance to hear some amazing Irish food stories and share yours too.
Published by Nine Bean Rows Books, Scoop magazine shares the inside story on Irish food and drink through storytelling. Inside each annual issue, you’ll read stories from many voices within Ireland and abroad, from food writers, academics, chefs, producers and growers to homemakers, cooks, and people who all share a passion for food and sharing memories.
A scoop and a yarn is the in-person extension of the magazine in the format of a storytelling event, where we gather to share our favourite food stories and memories together, enjoyed with a few scoops. Hosted by editor, Dee Laffan.
Saturday, 9th November 5-7pm
This two-hour session is split into two themes – in the first hour we are joined by traditional food conservationist and writer, Max Jones, co-founder of Up There The Last, as he launches “Remembered Recipes”, an event that focuses on collecting cherished, forgotten and lost recipes from across Ireland. Max will share some traditional recipes he has and we’ll hear from some local friends of recipes from the region. We encourage you to come and share your favourite family or regional dish with us.The second hour of this session will be dedicated to “the story of Irish food and Irish food in Ireland”, which according to chef and author Jp McMahon are two completely different things.
Jp has just published his latest book An Irish Food Story, which looks at history, culture and identity in Ireland through 100 foods. From farmhouse cheese to Findus Crispy Pancakes and everything in between. Jp will chat to us about his book, share his own stories about food and from the audience to hopefully see if we truly are what we eat.
